| My Coaching Experience Thus Far |
|
My coaching experience so far can be paraphrased by a friend's quote: "you learn 5% of what you hear, 10% of what you read, and 90% of what you teach." The ride has been very exciting. I'm learning more than I could ever imagine and I hope my students share the same feelings. It is great whenever a student "gets it" and go fry fishes at the tables like he's a sushi chef. It does wonders to my confidence whenever I hear this. I must admit there are days when coaching can be hard. It has nothing to do with the students nor the lesson plan. Having the ability to explain things in a simple manner has always make me feel good about myself. The hard part about coaching is when you're running hot and playing well at the tables yourself! You don't want to shorten your sessions but at the same time, responsibilities must be fulfilled. I know some students are laid back and could have their lessons delay a few days or so but I think this is unprofessional and unfair to the students. They paid a large amount of money for a service and thus, a service must be performed within the timeframe in which the student requests. The poker community works in a very funny way. This is probably the only industry where a customer shows up, pay a large amount of money, and do not know what type of service they will receive. Nevertheless, you have people lining up and joining waitlist hoping to gain some of that poker wisdom. At times, I feel good because I'm fortunate to have a certain set of skills to be good at the pokers. Other times, I feel funny because growing up, I never imagine I would become a teacher. I guess when there's lots of monies involved, new inner strengths are found! It is amazing how a simple game that revolves around an estimation of a opponent's set of holdings can be so complicated and thrilling at the same time. Hopefully, I will keep expanding my knowledge to the point where I can be artful when dealing with opponents' hand ranges. I love the game too much to let it passes me by. Until next time, this is your main Viet, tri.
